Frigid Temperatures

Tue Dec 10, 2013 11:48 pm

Going to be really cold here this week. I'm afraid I'll have to use the CRV to go on my 100 mile RT. Sadly neither the Leaf or the Fit EV will have near the range to get back and forth. I'm so used to driving the Fit today when I got into the Leaf I was trying to put the key in the ignition - I forgot that the Leaf has a power button. Later I'm driving down the street close to home in eco and I decided to put the car in drive so I pushed up on the stick and instead of taking off I realized I had put the car in neutral. The Leaf has a toggle switch that you push back to put the car in drive. It had been quite a while since I drove the Leaf and it felt so different than my FEV.

Two days ago, I barely made my round trip of 37 miles (low seat heat only). yesterday it was -15 in the early morning; I didn't even try. Today it was 15 degrees, and the range at full battery was 21 miles (lol). The sad part? It was pretty accurate. I drove the 19 miles using no aux power at all and had a quarter tank ( and it's largely downhill). Had to drive to the local community college to charge up. Bottom line - these cars are not yet ready for prime time (i.e. Northeast winters). I'll be using my pickup for a while. Love the car; it's just a work in progress. I have noticed there is essentially no regen below 25 or so. As my son said, "the electrons are like us, they don't want to move in this cold weather"

You bring up a good point. The “DISTANCE DRIVEN:” Trip Summary display (Owners Manual, Pg95) on a typical trip shows my “REGAIND ENERGY” (regen’d) miles are typically greater than my “ENERGY USED” miles. With regen reduced or eliminated, stop and go driving would shorten range by more than 50% before you even start looking at drag or accessories. I would imagine drivers with a higher REGAINED/USED ratio suffer the worst in low temps.

Anyone happen to know if Honda, or any EV makers doing any focus gropus with owners/leasors/drivers to learn this useful info for future planning of design of EV cars so they can be great for all climates?

Leaf also suffers in cold, but apparently not quite as much range loss. Also, 2014 leaf has a heat pump which is less drain on the battery.

I'm glad I'm off most of this week but Friday there's a high of 6 low of -2(F) . I'm eager to see what the car does with these new lows (to me at least) even on my short work commute. It doesn't get much colder than this around western NY, and with no garage this will be the coldest the car will probably ever be.
