New cars come with a set of promises from maker to the owner that the darn things will not fall apart in a way that could kill you for at least a decade. Despite the occasional outburst of broken vows, automakers tend to take this seriously, not just because it's law. But those promises can result in some odd choices, which is how a flatbed trailer came to be filled with crushed cars that were once low-mileage BMW electric vehicles.

Sad to think about it :( ... the FEV is such a nice car.

I am truly not looking forward to returning it.

It would be very sad to see these cars crushed. I try to keep the potential silver lining in mind... BMW offered its ActiveE lessees first dibs on (and a special edition of) the i3. I hope Honda comes up with a similar program for Fit EV lessees!

I hope Honda does as well, but since they started this program as a compliance program and not so much an R&D effort I doubt that will be the case. I think if Honda doesn't offer an alternative after the FEV trial then they will be losing many potential customers to a manufacturer that fills their needs. If that number is large enough for Honda is the big question.

I'm sure that Honda will offer an alternative... but not an EV.

I will bet money that the alternative will be a FCEV.

California is heavily pushing Fuel Cells (this strategy was first laid out in 2005). The "traveling credit" (for cars sold outside of CA) will expire for BEV's with the 2017 model year. Fuel Cell vehicles will still be eligible for the credits.

Part of their reasoning is that BEVs will be commercially viable at that point (also why hybrids no longer merit any special treatment), but Fuel Cell vehicles will need both the carrot and the stick ($ incentives and penalties for not selling them).

If Honda sees a potential profit in an EV, they will make one available. As it stands, the Fit EV was likely deemed a better (cheaper?) option than purchasing credits (from Tesla and others with a surplus) or paying the CA penalty.
